Meeting Announcement   (updated 4/13/2008)
 

The Northlake Community Alliance will NOT have Its regular May Board meeting but will instead have its Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 22nd at 7:30 pm.  It will be at Briarlake Baptist Church, "Back Lot Building" 2715 Lavista Rd, Decatur, GA 30033.  After a brief re-election of returning Board Members, several elected officials will speak.  Additionally, Chairman Tom Ulbricht will give an update on the Lavista Streetscape Project, the Overlay Zoning Ordinance, and the upcoming Business Breakfast.

General Announcements   (updated 4/12/2008)
 

1.  The Northlake Overlay Zone Ordinance Draft is available for review on the "Downloads" section of this Website.  Also included is the "Tiers" map associated with the ordinance.  This draft is being reviewed by the DeKalb County Attorney and there may be changes before the adoption process which began in February, 08. The Ordinance will go to the Board of Commissioners on May 20th, 10:00 am at the Maloof Auditorium in Decatur.  It will provide a stronger tool for controlling development and keeping out unwanted uses.  It will also have architectural, development, and signage controls. 

2.  The Lavista Rd. Streetscape Project is moving along rapidly and sidewalk has been installed on both sides from Harobi Dr to approximately to I-285.  The contractor has also begun installing landscaping and replacing concrete medians with landscaped medians.  Pedestrian crosswalks and timers will installed in a couple of weeks.  Georgia Power Co, has begun installing the lamp posts starting at Harobi Drive.  This projects should be completed in July. A TE grant has been awarded from US DOT in the amount of $475,000 plus the county match of $95,000, for a total of $570,000.  This will be used to continue streetscape work on Briarcliff Rd., Henderson Mill Rd., and Northlake Parkway on Right-of-way adjacent to the Mall.

3.  The Northlake Public Library will close for renovation on Wed. Apr. 30 and will re-open about Christmas, 2008.

 

   
 

Samaritan House Clean Street Team Available To Help Businesses

Samaritan House Clean Street Team is a non-profit organization that engages a team of motivated homeless men and women in various community improvement projects as part of a supervised, highly structured program geared at helping them attain self-sufficiency.  Each month they work removing litter and debris and clearing drains for the City of Atlanta, covering nearly 400 miles monthly.  In addition to our contract with the City, we also work with several private companies and other metro area municipalities. 

In exchange for their work, participants receive stipends and attend life stabilization and employment readiness workshops while actively seeking full-time employment and remaining drug free. One hundred percent of the businesses that hire our team are delighted with our work and renew their contracts with us each year; and eighty percent of Clean Street Team members have transitioned out of homelessness.  Michelle Kleinhans:
