NCA Bylaw Amendments Proposed for Annual Meeting, 2012

Each year, at its Annual Meeting, the NCA has an opportunity to amend its bylaws. Several changes are proposed for 2012 which will align the bylaws with practice and application which change in most organizations over time. It has been 10 years since the last amendment of the NCA bylaws so a few changes are proposed this year. Some are “housekeeping” and correction to punctuation etc, others are recommended by the Officers and Board of Trustees. The Trustees voted to approve the submission of these bylaws for advertising and presentation at the Annual Meeting by a unanimous voted on February16, 2012 You may find a copy of the bylaws and the changes proposed under “Plans and Documents” at this web site. These will be duly advertised in the DeKalb Champion Newspaper, the legal organ for DeKalb County, GA. They will then be placed before the NCA Organization membership, which will consist of the people who attend the Annual meeting scheduled for May 10, 2012. Community Shred Day, 2012 Scheduled for 9 am on 4/28, 2012

The Northlake Community Alliance, Inc will co-sponsor with Resurgens Bank and Eagle Secure Shredding, Inc, the 3rd annual Community Shred Day scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm in the parking lot of Resurgens Bank, located at 2300 Henderson Mill Rd, Atlanta, GA 30345. This is an easy and safe way to dispose of old bank and tax records or other sensitive documents. There is a 5 copier paper sized box or bag limit. Tax exempt donations (suggested $5 per box) requested will support the continued work of the NCA to beautify and improve the Northlake community.

Town Hall Meeting Wrap-up

The September 22^nd Town Hall Meeting, co-sponsored by Rep. Scott Holcomb, Northlake Community Alliance, Inc., and the DeKalb County Police Department, was attended by about 70 citizens at Henderson Mill Elementary School. The topic of discussion was area crime and crime prevention. Capt. Sonya Porter led discussion along with members of DPD giving suggestions on preventing auto and home theft. Capt. Porter indicated that thieves are attracted to electronic devices left in autos such as GPS and laptops, or by packages or purses left in plain sight. Lock your vehicle, even if in your garage or carport. Place packages in the car trunk and look around when entering or exiting your auto in parking lots. Join Neighborhood Watch programs and volunteer for the Police Department’s Volunteers In Police Service (VIPS). VIP’s drive in designated communities and phone in anything/anyone that looks unusual or suspicious. Notify the Police Department if you are leaving town for a few days or more as they will send patrol cars to circulate periodically and check anything that looks unusual. Purchase a “canned dog” machine or get a real dog, a big one preferable, to discourage would-be thieves.

Scott Holcomb, Ann Abramowitz, Tom Ulbricht, and NCA Board members who all contributed to this event. Special thanks go to Dr. Rebecca Jackson, Principal at Henderson Mill Elementary School for the use of the school.

NCA To Co-Host Town Hall Meeting on Crime/Prevention

Mark your calendars for an important town hall meeting on area crime and crime prevention. The meeting will be co-hosted by Representative Scott Holcomb, the Northlake Community Alliance, Inc (NCA), and the DeKalb County Police Department on Thursday, September 22, 2011, from 7:30 – 8:45 at Henderson Mill Elementary School. The school is located at 2408 Henderson Mill Road, Tucker, GA. This meeting will provide you with valuable information on what kind of crimes are being committed in the greater Northlake, Tucker, Lakeside, and Embry Hills areas. Police experts will discuss the best ways to deter criminals from committing break-ins/theft in homes and automobiles and deterrence of other crimes. Police staff will discuss the effectiveness of Community Policing and the VIP program. Time will be provided for questions and answers.

Chick-fil-A Opens at Northlake

On Thursday, May 26, the new Chick-fil-A, Northlake opened up to a huge crowd of grateful fans and dignitaries. One hundred of the 275 people that camped out overnight received a year’s worth of Chick-fil-A meals. Everybody else got samples and sandwiches during the opening ceremony. NCA was well represented at the event and Chairman, Tom Ulbricht, helped to help cut the ribbon. We heartily welcome operator/owner Brad and Deone Spratte and the new CFA staff to the neighborhood!

The NCA Annual Meeting, on May 19, was attended by over 150 people who came away with a lot of valuable information about street gangs. The program speakers included, Michael Carlson, Deputy Asst. DA, DeKalb District Attorney’s Office, and Deputy Sgt Charlie Lyda of the DeKalb County Police Dept, Gang Unit. They provided a lot of insight into what people should be aware of and cautious about. They said that street gangs are a large and growing phenomenon although the Northlake area, per se, does not currently have a significant gang related problem. People need to be aware of territory “tagging” or initials/names written generally in black spray paint or marker. Any such tagging or other suspected gang activity should be immediately reported to the DCPD, gang unit. Thanks to all who spoke, attended or helped with the Annual Meeting.

Recycle Day A Huge Success

The Electronics Recycle Day on March 19, 2011, co-sponsored by NCA, Simon Northlake Mall, Rep. Scott Holcomb, and ERS, Inc, was a “huge” success with approx. 300 area residents and business people dropping off sixteen tons of recyclable electronic devices. We appreciate the donations contributed to support NCA and the Simon Youth Foundation. Below are a few photos of the event.

NCA Annual Meeting: “Street Gang Activity”

NCA will host its Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 19, 2011 from 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm at the Briarlake Baptist Church, Backlot Building. After a brief business meeting to re-elect board members, Mr. Michael S. Carlson, Deputy Chief Asst. District Attorney, DeKalb Co. will make a presentation on Street Gang activity in the Northlake/DeKalb community. This is a tremendously important topic for citizens and businesses. There will also be comments from the DeKalb County Police Department on this subject and there will be time for Q&A.

NCA Board of Trustees members proposed to be re-elected include: Tom Ulbricht (residential rep); Victor Moldovan (bus. & res rep); Dale Phillips (resid. rep); Charles DeWitt (business rep); Tim Thilman (residential rep); Van Johnson (business rep); Marie Moore (business rep); Matthew Stancil (business rep). Board members serve on staggered 1 year terms and are re-elected by the community members in attendance at the Annual Meeting. All presented are current members in good standing. There is one vacant business representative position and names may be submitted as candidates to Tom Ulbricht at tculbr@gmail.com to be considered by the Board of Trustees.

NCA, Resurgens Bank, and Eagle Secure Shredding will host its 3rd Community Shred Day on Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 9:00 am until 12 pm in the Resurgens Bank parking lot (2300 Henderson Mill Rd, Atlanta, GA 30345). Bring those old tax records, cancelled checks, and any kind of sensitive paper document for completely secure shredding. The cost is free but we will be requesting tax exempt donations to support the work of the Northlake Community Alliance, Inc. in the Northlake community. There will be a limit of 5 copier paper sized boxes or equivalent bags etc. Arrangements can be made for large shred jobs by contacting Ian Taylor at Eagle Secure Shredding (770-619-5300)

Free Northlake Electronics Recycling Event, March 19, 2011

Bring all of your old TV’s, VCR’s, cell phones, telephones, pc’s, printers, microwave ovens, and any other electronic devices and dry rechargeable batteries to be recycled at the Northlake Electronics Recycling Event. Help us to be “Green” and keep these toxic items out of our landfills! The Northlake Community Alliance, Inc (NCA), Simon Northlake Mall, and Electronic Recycling Services (ERS) are sponsoring a free (except for a $10 lead disposal fee for TV’s) electronics recycling event at Northlake Mall parking lot, behind Macy’s on Saturday, March 19, 2011 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.
